On 27 October 2017, the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation (ICYF-DC) organized an international workshop on the ‘Role of youth in facing Migration Challenges’ in partnership with the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) and the United Nations International Organization for Migration with a view to presenting a number of focused panels on relevant policy frameworks, implementation mechanisms, youth engagement and the role of media in the context of migration challenges facing youth.
The workshop was graciously hosted by H.E. Dr. Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri, Director General of ISESCO at his Organization’s headquarters, and featured a number of high-level dignitaries and guests including H.E Mr. Abdelkrim Benatiq, Minister of Moroccans Living Abroad and Migration Affairs. Also in attendance were a number of representatives of international organizations, NGO’s and youth delegates.
During his speech in the opening ceremony, ICYF-DC President Amb. Elshad Iskandarov emphasized the strategic human capital value of youth, and committed to presenting the proceedings of the international youth and migration workshop to the 4th Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers (ICYSM) set to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2018; where ICYF-DC would introduce essential youth and migration issues to the pending OIC Youth Strategy, as well as in ICYF-DC flagship initiatives. Another important suggestion made was for the drafting of an OIC Migration Strategy to contend with the challenges of migration affecting youth in OIC member states and beyond, as with the case of the Rohingya.
Throughout the workshop, a number of panels were held on the themes of establishing or strengthening national coordination mechanisms among stakeholders for better coordination policies on youth migration, enhancing migrant youth participation in receiving countries, and the role of media and social networks in the context of youth migration. To this end, issues central to enhancing the state of youth development and well-being throughout OIC Member States and elsewhere were discussed, while presenting actionable solutions to current challenges faced by youth.
Based on discussions held in the relevant panels, the workshop adopted the outcome document summarizing the visions of High-Level Panelists and recommendations voiced by youth delegates, which is intended to be circulated to all relevant stakeholders for consideration and possible implementation.
