Role of Governments in Ensuring Youth Development

Panel Description

Nearly 50% of the developing world population is youth and children (World Bank, 2010). There are 1.2 billion 15 to 24 year olds in the world and one billion live in developing countries (2005 figures, UN Population Division, World Population Prospects, 2008). When it comes to the OIC region, it has almost 1.5 billion Muslims and 1/3 of it is constituted by youth. There are some tools/mechanisms to promote dialogue between the young people and governments at all levels to provide them with the opportunity to present their perspectives on the decisions at governmental levels. It is very important to establish clear roles and visions for the Governments regarding the participation of young people in the  decision making process and implementation stages. It is also aimed to find answers to the following questions:

  • What is the exact role of the governments and how to enhance active youth involvement and participation while ensuring youth development
  • What are the most common, useful existing tools/mechanisms that ensure youth development?

Countering Violence Through Development: Civil Youth Initiatives

Panel Description

There are very different forms of violence and all forms cause a lot of problems. Actors can be different but violence usually impedes development at different levels. It is important to work on useful information and tools/actions and policies to prevent and deal with violence at all levels. There are also many initiatives and practices by young people that help to raise awareness of the effects of violence on different victims, including influential mechanisms to stop  violence directly. It is aimed at sharing and discussing the influential mechanisms and the civil youth initiatives from the OIC region that can be used as good models. So the main question for this session is:

  • What are the causes and effects of violence on development and how can it be prevented and controlled by civil youth initiatives?

Intra and Inter Civilizational/Cultural Dialogue

Panel Description

Intra and Inter, Civilizational and Cultural Dialogue includes human interactions and relationships. It is about individuals and communities and on many other levels. Every individual has their own background with their own cultural elements. We live, work and socialize together with all these differences and we come into daily contact with each other. Dialogue, therefore, is not just something that takes place on an official or academic level only – it is part of daily life during which different cultural and religious groups interact with each other directly, and where tensions between them are the most tangible. When we speak about the specific region (OIC, EU or any other), we also speak about diversities, definitely. So, it becomes very crucial to discuss and establish strategies/mechanisms to promote such dialogue for a better collaboration between young people.

Media/Social Media in Youth Actions to Promote Gender Equality, Education and Active Citizenship

Panel Description

The emergence of media/social media tools has made it possible for people to communicate with thousands of others on any issue or subject they are interested in. Thus, the impact and ways on how to use these tools has been greatly magnified in different parts of life. Especially, young people are the group that use  social media most effectively and thus have become the most influenced target. So far, social media has been a very strong tool to promote social issues/problems such as gender equality, education and active citizenship and various projects were successfully realized. This panel aims to share and discuss good practices about how to use these tools in youth actions to promote the mentioned subjects, gender equality, education and active citizenship.
