ICYF-DC STATEMENT ON THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF KHOJALY GENOCIDE

On behalf of the Board and Member Organizations, H.E. Amb. Elshad Iskandarov, the President of the Islamic Conference Youth Forum for Dialogue and Cooperation (ICYF-DC), an affiliated institution to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expresses his heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the people and Government of the Republic of Azerbaijan on the 25th anniversary of the genocide of Azerbaijani civilians perpetrated by the Armenian armed forces in the town of Khojaly (the Republic of Azerbaijan) in 26 February, 1992, which states:

This most brutal and violent act committed against peaceful civilians in course of ongoing Armenian aggression against the territorial integrity of the Republic of Azerbaijan was part of the Armenia’s systematic ethnic cleansing and genocide policy against Azerbaijani people continuing since the beginning of the 20th century. Although, the numerous war crimes and atrocities perpetrated by the Armenian forces in Khojaly was fundamentally well documented by the numerous independent sources, local and international media, eyewitnesses as well as law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Azerbaijan and recorded even by some Armenian media sources, the international community has failed to bring to justice the perpetrators which served as negative precedent to further war crimes in different geographies, including Srebrenitsa Genocide (Bosnia, 1995).

In this context, ICYF-DC will continue its active engagement in and support toward the “Justice for Khojaly” (www.justiceforkhojaly.org) international civil awareness campaign initiated by Mrs. Leyla Aliyeva, ICYF-DC General Coordinator for Inter-cultural Dialogue and aimed at disseminating of historical truth on the Khojaly genocide. As a result of the Campaign’s activities the national legislative bodies of more than 15 States as well as international organizations (such as Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and its Parliamentary Union) adopted a number of resolutions and declarations recognizing the tragedy of Khojaly as an act of genocide and calling to bring its perpetrators to justice.

While commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, ICYF-DC demonstrates its solidarity with the people of Azerbaijan in efforts to fully restore the justice, liberate its territories currently occupied by Armenia and fully restore its sovereignty in Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.
